Firefly Property Management was founded after eight years of managing investment portfolios for other owners, including more than 2,200 homes at one company and 500 at another. That experience provided firsthand insight into what property owners need to succeed and what residents deserve to feel at home.
As a licensed Managing Broker in Illinois, Texas, and Virginia, and a rental property owner, Firefly understands property management from every perspective. After experiencing every stage of the investment journey, one truth became clear: regardless of the market, the foundation of exceptional property management is people and the relationships built with them.
Why Firefly Exists
Firefly Property Management was created to raise the standard for the industry. Too often, owners are treated like account numbers and residents like placeholders. Meet our Team
Brian Tanaka
Designated Managing Broker/Owner
I’ve held every position in the property management life cycle: leasing, screening, renewals, maintenance, turnovers, and move-outs. Since 2018, I’ve done that work across portfolios of 2,200 and then 500 single-family homes, serving more than 1,500 landlords. I don’t just oversee each stage. I’ve done the job myself, so I know how each stage affects the next and where things fall through the cracks between them.
In different roles, I’ve walked dozens of homes a week, signed 25+ leases a week during peak season, handled 40–60 renewals a month, and closed out roughly 700 security deposits a year. Along the way, I’ve executed more than 2,000 lease agreements and personally screened 3,000+ applications.
On the maintenance side, I’ve supervised both in-house maintenance teams and outside vendors and managed operations for hundreds of work orders a month. I’ve owned the full turnover process: making sure make-readies are done right, catching maintenance issues before they become expensive, troubleshooting work orders myself whenever I can, and keeping unnecessary vendors off the property so owners don’t get nickel-and-dimed.
I’m a licensed Managing Broker in Illinois, Texas, and Virginia. I came into this business from the other side of the lease. As a tenant, I went through a messy security deposit close-out, and within a few months I was working for that same company. I’ve been all-in ever since, and I still bring that perspective to every property. I know what frustrates owners, and I know what makes good residents stay.
More than 1,500 owner relationships have taught me what matters most: clear communication, problems prevented instead of just fixed, and someone who stays calm and finds real solutions. I protect your investment and treat the people living in your home with respect, because residents who are treated well stay longer, care for the property, and cut down on costly turnovers. That’s the standard I built Firefly Property Management around.
I was born and raised in Bloomington-Normal and earned a double major in economics and music at Knox College. After ten years in Texas, I moved home in 2025 to be closer to family. Outside of work, I’m a church music director. I conduct choirs, play pipe organ and piano, and sometimes sit in on jazz drums. In 2026, I completed a 3-year term on the Board of Directors of the Presbyterian Association of Musicians.
